In 1995-1996, I was a senior at Gustavus Adolphus College, majoring in music with honors work in music history and literature. My senior thesis was on John Coltrane. The main purpose of this website is to make that thesis available to the world. The site is also a resource for Coltrane fans and those who are interested in learning more about his music.
These days I make a living as a freelance web consultant, designer and developer, operating under the name Room 34 Creative Services.
I am still active as a musician, recording solo work as Room 34, as well as playing clarinet and electric bass with the Minneapolis South High Community Band and Jazz Band, and electric bass with 32nd Street Jazz and the Lake Country Jazz Collective big band. I’m also active as a pit musician with community theatre companies around the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota, having played in recent years for productions with Chaska Valley Family Theatre, 4 Community Theatre, Summerset Theatre and Riverland Community College.
In November 2024 I produced a video essay exploring the structure of Coltrane’s 1965 album A Love Supreme, in honor of the 60th anniversary of its recording on December 9, 1964, and my band’s plan to perform it in its entirety live in January 2025.
